How We Built ETC Monitoring to Eliminate Manual Tracking in Slack

ETC-Monitor by ToDo IT

This blog explores how ToDo IT designed and implemented ETC-Monitor, a lightweight Slack automation system that tracks estimated completion times directly from conversations and sends intelligent reminders automatically.

The goal was simple: Eliminate manual follow-ups without adding friction to team workflow.

The Problem we were facing

As teams scale, coordination becomes increasingly complex — especially inside real-time communication tools like Slack.

Deadlines are often mentioned casually in threads:

"Will send tomorrow."
"Give me 2 days."
"Friday evening."

But without structured tracking:

  • Commitments get buried
  • Follow-ups rely on memory
  • Leadership spends time checking status
  • Accountability becomes manual

The solution we built

We built ETC Monitoring — a Slack bot that listens for estimated completion mentions and automatically tracks them.

Instead of introducing a new tool or dashboard, we enhanced existing behavior. The workflow is simple:

📝 Sara types:
"ETC tomorrow 4 PM"
🤖 ETC-Monitor responds:
"Reminder created!
Estimated completion: Tomorrow 04:00 PM IST
You'll be reminded in 24 hours and 37 minutes."
⏰ When time arrives:
"@Sara Status!"

Conclusion

ETC Monitoring proves that small, well-designed automation inside existing workflows can create a big impact. By turning casual Slack deadlines into tracked commitments, we eliminated manual follow-ups and gave teams back their time and focus — without adding new tools or complexity.
